…Denver is the leading town of Colorado, and lies under the very shadow of the Rocky Mountains, a few miles north of Pike’s Peak. And, indeed, the amount of business transacted in Denver is wonderful, when the small number of inhabitants is considered. The Banking-Houses are crowded with miners in all sorts of costume, bringing their bags of "dust" to exchange for green backs, the dust being sold at so much per ounce. It is not an uncommon thing for bushels of gold dust to accumulate in the safes of the principal bankers.
